John Adams autograph manuscript signed on 13 July 1769, approximately one year before Adams rose to even greater legal prominence in his defense of the British Boston Massacre soldiers. In this legal document, Adams advocates for John Melvill in a debt dispute, stating that a man named Robert Jordan failed to pay his debt to Melvill and that Timothy Fitch, who has goods owned by Jordan, must turn them over to Melvill. The John Melvill involved in the dispute was a well-known merchant in Boston at the time, uncle to Revolutionary War patriot Thomas Melvill who, in turn, was grandfather to novelist Herman Melville. Adams pens two lengthy statements, one on each side of the document, signing ''John Adams'' underneath his statement titled ''Melvill vs. Fitch''. Partially printed document with red wax seal measures 8'' x 6.75''. Restoration along folds, including through signature, and infill where paper loss was present. Overall very good condition. An unusual document with so much writing in Adams' hand.
