John Adams 4-language ship's papers signed as President, dated 14 November 1798 during the Quasi-War fought almost entirely at sea between France and the United States. Adams empowers the schooner Skjoldebrand to navigate international waters with this document, countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. Fought from July 1798 to September 1800, the unofficial naval war between the United States and France, deemed the ''Quasi-War'' was fought, with each country seizing merchant ships of the other, such as this vessel commanded by William Penrose. Document measures 19.5'' x 15.75'', with two red wax-based paper seals intact. Uneven right edge, a few chips to margin and archival repair to verso. Overall in very good to near fine condition given age, with a large, prominent signature by Adams.
