James Speed autograph letter signed, datelined Louisville, 28 July 1876. Speed writes to M.D. Phillips, documenting his service as Attorney General: ''I was appointed Atty Genl of the U. States, in the latter part of Novr. 1864 & resigned in July 1866...James Speed''. As a Kentuckian who strongly supported the emancipation and then enfranchisement of slaves, Speed resigned his position as Attorney General under Andrew Johnson. Letter measures 8.25'' x 6.625''. Very good to near fine condition, with bold handwriting. Accompanied by an engraving of Speed.
