James Garfield twice-signed check as Congressman from Ohio, dated 5 April 1873. Garfield makes the check payable to himself in the amount of $617.68, ''balance due me on 42nd Congress''. The First National Bank is crossed out, replaced with ''N.G. Ordway - Sergt at Arms''. After serving as Sergeant of Arms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Nehemiah G. Ordway was appointed by President Hayes as Governor of the Dakota Territory. It was a controversial tenure, and Ordway was ultimately indicted for corruption.
