James Buchanan document signed as President, regarding the appointment of Richard Kidder Meade as Minister to Brazil. Document is addressed to His Majesty Dom Pedro II, Constitutional Emperor of Brazil, dated 4 August 1857 at the time Meade was appointed. Brazil was the last nation to abolish slavery in 1888, with this document signed shortly before the American Civil War. Single page on bifolium features Buchanan's large signature. Measures 8'' x 10''. Separation starting at folds, overall very good.
