Abba Eban letter signed as Israel's Ambassador to the United States. On Embassy of Israel letterhead, Eban writes to ''LOOK'' magazine on 17 November 1954 regarding the prospect of peace in the coming year. Intriguing letter reads in part, ''...The element of distrust dominating the relationship between East and West, no doubt, constitutes the major stumbling block on the road to co-existence...The elimination of this element cannot be achieved by a single stroke. It is a process that requires time to allow moderation to develop and be translated into action...'' Eban then diplomatically advocates for the People's Republic of China to be admitted into the United Nations (''interests of the United Nations would be best served...by the Government actually in power''), a position not supported by the United States and which didn't happen until 1971. Eban then closes by recommending several actions to prevent war in 1955: ''direct negotiation by parties in dispute'', ''the attempt to secure...atomic weapons and conventional armaments'' and ''increased...assistance to underdeveloped areas''. Signed ''Abba Eban''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 8'' x 10.5''. Folds and staple puncture to upper left, otherwise near fine.
