Very moving letter signed by Helen Keller, written to a Reverend James Gordon who was doing work for the American Federation of the Blind. Dated 25 May 1925 from the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, Keller writes in part, ''...It is true, is it not, that we rise to God only through the lives we make worth living. It seems to me that humanity is the living Word of God. / The people who gathered in your church yesterday afternoon seemed deeply interested in what we told them about the Foundation. I felt their sympathy - it was as if many friendly hands were held out to me in the dark. Such encouragement helps one to go on with a difficult task. I have a long, weary way to go before the Endowment Fund is completed. I can only hope and trust that beyond the strenuous effort lies a better world for the sightless. In my heart is a high desire; but other people do not always see the goal...The Door of Hope is never quite closed. Gloom and darkness may enfold us; but always this golden door stands open where the sunlight of God's Love slips through. In moments of discouragement I look up to this shining doorway, and my spirit wings towards it...[signed] Helen Keller''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 7'' x 10.75'', signed in pencil by Keller as was typical of her letters. Uneven toning, chipping to edges and some creasing. Overall very good condition.
