Harry Houdini typed letter signed on his personal ''Lettergram'' stationery. Dated 23 September 1923, Houdini writes to his business associate Faber Birren, asking for biographies of Christian Scientist Mary Baker Eddy. Letter reads in part, ''Dear Birren, When I get to Chi, let me see the various books re Mrs Eddy. I want to get the book in which she is exposed as having taken the entire idea away from her teacher. / I have the book in my library, but want to send it to a friend of mine. Look this book up I think there are two on the subject, and show them to me. Ill see you as soon as my rush is over at the Theatre. If you have nothing to do come around Sunday and see me regards.'' Signed ''Houdini'' in black fountain pen.
Faber Birren was a friend of Houdini's who worked at a bookstore selling Houdini's books. Birren would also be dispatched by Houdini to investigate local psychics and spiritualists and then report back to Houdini with his findings. He would later become one of the most influential color theorists of the 20th century. Single page letter measures 8.375'' x 6''. Folds, small closed tear, mounting remnants to verso and hole punched at left. Very good condition. Consigned by the family of Faber Birren.
