Harper Lee typed letter signed on 28 February 1994. Lee writes an engaging letter to her friend Bill, responding to being sent a new novel, ''Tuscaloosa'' by W. Glasgow Phillips. She compares the author to ''...a young Coleridge...re-read Kubla Khan. You'll be haunted by familiar territory. If Tuscaloosa opinion is that Tuscaloosa is sick, you may say that it's sick like Kubla Khan is sick...'' She continues, ''...It's been so long since I've read a first (or second or third) novel with such pleasure. As you know, I'd given up on novels written after Jane Austen's time, and had lapsed with contentment into old fogeydom--there's so much more to read; adolescents forever clawing at cosmic hickies is not my line of country...nowadays there's so damn little to praise, my heart leaps up when I behold a beautiful English sentence. Thank you for giving me a whole book o them. Much love, [signed] Nelle''. 11'' x 8.5'' letter is in near fine condition.
