Land grant for forty acres of land in Cherokee County, Georgia, deeded according to the Gold Lottery of 1832. Awarded to Riley J. Backus, this plot designated as ''Pine Land'', with pine trees abutting all sides, was surveyed on 26 June 1832. Following the Georgia Gold Rush of 1829, Georgian land was parcelled out according to a lottery system where the fortunate drawers would be given 40 acres of land in gold-rich areas. This lottery, along with a larger one also in 1832, started the Trail of Tears, in which Native American settlers were forced westward. Document is dated 6 May 1846 and references an act passed on 21 December 1843, which limited fortunate drawers in the Lotteries of 1821 and 1832 from taking out grants until 1 October 1844. Document measures 8'' x 10'', with two sheets joined together by a paper ribbon connected to original round seal. Some shadowing of seal to paper when folded, overall in very good condition.
