Scarce free frank signed by George Washington as General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Free frank is clearly signed ''G Washington'' to the lower left, next to a notation in another hand, ''Major Genl St. Clair / Springfield'', referring to Washington's aide-de-camp Arthur St. Clair. The free frank is affixed to a paper mount, to which a period slip is also attached reading, ''General Washington / February 27, 1780 / Morris Town''. At this time, George Washington's Continental Army was experiencing several defeats, before its ultimate victory less than two years later at Yorktown. Free frank measures 6.75'' x 3.5'' with total document measuring 8.5'' x 5''. Foxing, toning and a closed tear to top. Some chipping to the edges, though overall in very good condition considering age. A scarce and very collectible Presidential free frank signed.
