Futurist cartographer, engineer and architect R. Buckminster Fuller signed Dymaxion World Map, his groundbreaking two-dimensional map for which he earned the distinction of being the first American to receive a patent for world cartography. Fuller's humanistic goal for this new design was to help people think globally about the planet, with its immediate visual impact showing the Earth as one contiguous land mass. Map is from 1954, #148, an early edition signed and inscribed by Fuller to his niece, reading, ''To my niece Sarah Willets Abbot / In fundamental gratitude to the great integrity of [the] universe which permits us to have a spontaneously common sense in response to our societal[?] and unique individual integrities of experience. And in deep spontaneous affection for this. Buckminster Fuller 6/3/1956''. Map measures 35'' x 22.5'', partially affixed to original board. Much of the printed information about the map, originally affixed to back of board, has torn away. Pinholes at corners and glue remnants along margins, with small tear and light dampstaining at lower left margin. Body of map is near fine save for a few blemishes such as a brown abrasion at left, not touching map. Overall very good condition. Rare as signed by Fuller, with personal association.
