President Franklin Pierce adds his large signature to a document, dated 3 February 1854, appointing Milton Hall to a four-year term as Naval Officer for the naval district of Newport, Rhode Island. The President signs, ''Franklin Pierce''. Secretary of Treasury James Guthrie countersigns below the blindstamped seal of the Treasury Department. 16.25'' x 12.5'' document is archivally matted and framed to an overall size of 24.5'' x 21''. Moderate separation at folds and paper loss to document; small chips on edges of frame. Very good.
