Franklin Pierce autograph letter signed as President. He writes ''To the Proprietors of The Republic'' from Washington D.C.: ''Gentlemen / I enclose herewith a copy of a letter this day sent to the Proprietor of the Union [publication]. If the public printing is being executed by you under a similar appointment, your authority will cease from this date...Franklin Pierce.'' Letter is undated, although the letter to which Pierce refers is included in the lot, and is dated 23 August 1853. This letter is archivally taped into the card-style stationery of Pierce's letter. Pierce's single page letter on mourning stationery is likely attributable to the loss of Pierce's only surviving child earlier that year. Single page measures 7'' x 8.75''. Folds, pencil notation to top edge, and small area of paper loss to upper left. Very good condition. Pre-certified by JSA.
