Significant letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to famed U.S. correspondent for The Times of London, Sir Willmott Harsant Lewis, just months before World War II. Dated 14 June 1939, typed letter signed with additional handwritten postscript reads in full: ''Please accept my thanks for the United States number for The Times of London. I am delighted to have it and shall look forward with much pleasure to its perusal. I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness in sending it to me. Very sincerely yours, [signed] Franklin D. Roosevelt / [handwritten note] Could you send me your stories to the Times, covering the visit? I hear they were the best''. Roosevelt refers in this letter to the important Royal visit by King George VI during 1939, on the brink of war in Europe. Roosevelt felt strongly that the western democracies should unite and consequently invited George VI to the United States, coopting the press in the process to garner the support of the American people. Letter on White House stationery measures 8.5'' x 11'' in near fine condition. With original transmittal envelope.
