Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, signs a typed letter on her official House of Representatives stationery. The Montana congresswoman writes to Mrs. Portofee: ''...I am sorry that in the rush of work in the office I have neglected to send your son an autograph for his collection. I am writing Richard today. My best wishes are with you. Sincerely yours, [signed] Jeanette Rankin''. Rankin was a pacifist and the only member of Congress to vote against entering both WWI and WWII. Folded letter measures 5.25'' x 7'' in near fine condition.
