Rare first edition, first printing of Isaac Asimov's ''Foundation'' trilogy, perhaps the most influential science fiction novels of the 20th century, which won a special Hugo Award for ''Best All-Time Series'' in 1966. New York: Gnome Press, 1951-53. Each volume is housed in its original first printing dust jacket with $2.75 price intact. Set includes:
1) ''Foundation''. New York: Gnome Press, 1951 first edition, first printing. First edition noted on copyright page. Bound in publisher's dark navy boards with red lettering on spine and galaxy on front board. Boards measures 5.5'' x 8.25'' and book runs 255pp. Sheets measure 20.3 x 13.5 cm and 1.9 cm across the top. Dust jacket shows $2.75 on front flap, spaceships in blue on front cover, ''Journey to Infinity'' and ''Typewriter in the Sky and Fear'' on rear flap, and three titles plus upcoming Fantasy Calendar for 1952 on back cover. Gnome Press address is also ''80 East 11th Street, N. Y. 3''. Closed 1.5'' tear to rear cover of jacket, otherwise book and jacket are near fine.
2) ''Foundation and Empire''. New York: Gnome Press, 1952 first edition, first printing. First edition noted on copyright page. Bound in publisher's red boards with black lettering on spine and galaxy on front board. ''Gnome Press'' on spine measures 2.2 cm across, sheets measure 1.8 cm across the top. Boards measure 5.5'' x 8.25'' and book runs 247pp. Dust jacket shows $2.75 on rear flap, four-color cover has ''A new science fiction novel by ISAAC ASIMOV'' on front cover, ''GNOME PRESS/NEW YORK'' on front flap, ''DON'T MISS THE FIRST BOOK!'' in red on rear flap, and 26 titles on rear cover along with Gnome Press address of ''80 East 11th Street, N. Y. 3''. Light shelf wear with bumping to corners, else near fine. Light wear to jacket with price on front flap clipped, but still appearing on rear flap. Very good to near fine condition.
3) ''Second Foundation''. New York: Gnome Press, 1953 first edition, first printing. First edition noted on copyright page. Bound in publisher's variant green boards with black lettering on spine. ''Prolog'' page appears before the Table of Contents, where its page number is shown as ''vii'', although the actual ''Prolog'' pages are unnumbered. Book measures 5.5'' x 8.25'' and runs 210pp. Dust jacket shows $2.75 on both flaps, and 25 titles on rear cover along with Gnome Press address of ''80 East 11th Street, N. Y. 3''. Slight cocking, light toning and foxing to endpapers, overall very good plus condition. Light wear to jacket, overall near fine.
