The Enrico Fermi Award presented in 1972 to Stafford L. Warren, the physician and radiologist who invented the mammogram in 1930 and also served on the Manhattan Project as Chief of Medicine, responsible for the safety of the project members. Warren then went on to become the first Dean of the School of Medicine at UCLA, shepherding the school to one of the most premier medical schools in the world.

The Fermi Award, established in 1956 under President Eisenhower, honors scientists from around the world for their lifetime achievements, and is considered one of the most prestigious awards next to the Nobel Prize. In Warren's citation for the Fermi Award, it states that he received the award ''For the imaginative, prescient, and vigorous efforts which made possible the early development of atomic energy so as to assure the protection of man and the environment, and for the establishment of a biomedical research program which has resulted in many substantial applications of ionizing radiation to diagnosis and treatment of disease and to the general welfare.''

Medal features a relief portrait of Enrico Fermi, with his name and the years of his birth and death on the front. "Scientia Progressus" is also engraved, which translates from Latin to "the progress of science". Verso reads: "Presented to Stafford L. Warren for especially meritorious contributions to the development, use, or control of atomic energy / May 2, 1972". Medal weighs 438 grams or 15.45 ounces, and measures 3" in diameter. Near fine condition with a brilliant gold finish. With an LOA from consignor.
