Broadside issued by Parliament summoning volunteer soldiers in preparation for fighting the English Civil War. The war pitted King Charles against Parliament and divided England's people between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. Dated 28 July 1642, the ''Order of Both Houses of Parliament for Encouragement of Voluntiers [sic]'' reads in part: ''...all such person or persons...within the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales, as shall desire, and willingly submit themselves to be Trained, and Exercised in the use of their Arms...and order of marching...All Majors, Justices of Peace, Sheriffs, Bailiffs, Constables, and other His Majesty's Officers, that shall encourage and assist said the persons in the peaceable and quiet Training...shall be held by both Houses of Parliament to have done a very acceptable service therein...'' Three months later, the Battle of Edgehill was fought as the first of the War. Ultimately, the Parliamentarians won; they had Charles executed in 1649 and abolished the monarchy altogether until 1660. Broadside measures 8.25'' x 11.5''. Toning and creasing, with detached upper quarter, else very good. Mounted to a paper board to an overall size of 11.75'' x 18.25''.
