Early concept art for Ridley Scott's ''Alien'', the classic 1979 sci-fi horror film that won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. One of the most pivotal sequences in the film is illustrated here, showing the crewmembers descend a very long elevator from the Nostromo spaceship (originally called the ''Leviathan'', as it is here), about to encounter the famous Space Jockey and Alien creature. Three drawings are rendered, showing different views of the crew leaving the spaceship, intending to impart a feeling of separation from the rest of the crew and from the safety of the ship. Notations on sheet read, ''Leviathan 'Gangway' on Planetoid Surface / Stage Set. 'Smoke' Storm'' with additional notations about the parts of the spaceship, such as ''Bottom of Elevator on 'Gangway'''. Other notations read, ''Leviathan Air Lock Exterior'' with some artwork labeled as ''Miniature'' (i.e., model would be built) and some labeled ''Full Size Set''. Artwork was done in 1977, signed ''Scotty'' three times, on each illustration, possibly by Ridley Scott, but more likely Elliot Scott, a Hollywood production designer uncredited on ''Alien'' who worked on the ''Indiana Jones'' franchise. Artwork is rendered in pen and marker in colors of brown, black and grey on both sides of artist paper. Measures 17'' x 9.5''. Very light creasing, else near fine. From the collection of former 20th Century Fox executive Peter Beale, whose COA accompanies the lot.
