Lot of letters related to the assassination of President James Garfield, one of only four Presidents to be killed while in office. Lot includes 1) Postcard from New York, postmarked 2 July 1881, the day of Garfield's shooting by assassin Charles Guiteau. A woman writes in part, ''Pres. Garfield was shot this morning in Washington; his recovery is doubtful - It is all excitement here...'' 2) Envelope postmarked from Holyoke, Massachusetts on 19 September 1881, the day Garfield passed away from his gunshot wounds. 3) Stamp and postmark from 19 September 1881, cut from an envelope. 4-5) Two engravings showing the train depot where Garfield was shot, and the home where Garfield died. Postcard and envelope measure 5.125'' x 3''; clipped postmark measures 2.75'' x 1.375; engravings measure 4.375'' x 2.75 and 4.25'' x 2.5'' respectively. Light wear, closed tears to engravings, and trimming to top of one. Very good condition.
