Bound collection of ''Harper's Weekly, A Journal of Civilization'' from 3 January 1863 through 23 January 1864. Year's worth of articles and editorials in the most widely read journal in the U.S. during the Civil War are focused mostly on the events of the war. This was the year the Union pulled into the lead with its capture of the Confederacy's entire holdings along the Mississippi River. Already on 24 January 1863 an article is worded confidently, ''In connection with the gradual downfall of slavery...'' Covered here are the famous battles of Vicksburg, Port Hudson and Newbern, with a wealth of etched illustrations, including battle illustrations by the famed Thomas Nast, the ''father of political cartooning''. Also reported is the wedding of the Prince of Wales, among other timely news, shipwrecks etc., along with lighter entertaining material and advertisements. Issues are bound in paper and leather boards. Compilation is paginated 1-832 and page count begins again at 1 when the 1864 issues begin, running through 64. Measures 11.25'' x 16.25''. Overall foxing to exterior, surface loss to board edges and some chipping to the top edge affecting a section of leaves. Interior has a few detached leaves and cracking to spine at pp.368-369. The top of a page of the 14 February issue has a pencil notation reading ''Whitman''. Loosening to spine, and expected toning and chipping to fragile leaves. Very good.
