Civil War soldier Josiah Brown autograph letter signed. Brown was likely in an Ohio regiment, as he writes to his brother Theodore Brown in Toledo, Ohio. Letter is datelined, ''Fairfax Seminary n. Alexandria Sept. 8th 1862'' and postmarked ten days later. Content reads in full, ''Dear Bro Theodore, I have just rec'd yours dated Sept 3rd So you see it has been 5 days coming - I see you have been quite anxious about me + uncertain about my fate in the late engagement our Brigade had at Manassas. But you must have heard from home of my safety, as I wrote home just as soon as I had an opportunity. Our Brigade did not suffer as badly as has been supposed - A large number were taking prisoners and paroled, but will be of no use to us until they are exchanged. Several officers in our regiment were badly wounded. The only wonder is that we ever got out of the dangerous position in which we were placed, right between two rebel forts, both of them shelling us at the same time. It was all on account of the rashness of Genl Taylor. He himself has died since from a wound in the leg, so he has gone to a higher tribunal where he will have to answer. I am now here by myself, lying in sibley tent - the Brigade left here night before last. + our doctors let one + several others stay here as we were not able to march - I am not exactly sick but they have marched us so hard lately that I can't stand it. I don't know what I am to do, go to a hospital or follow the regiment - the Brigade has gone over into Maryland beyond Washington somewhere, I understand. Have you heard how [Eliza] is. How we have been visited lately in the family. I hope + pray that Eliza will soon recover. Excuse me from writing more at present as I don't feel very strong - I think I have rec'd all the Cincinnati [illegible] you have sent. Your own Brother Josiah''. Letter written in dark pencil runs 3pp. on a single sheet of card-style stationery. Measures 5'' x 8''. Mild smudging, toning, creasing and a small area of paper loss from seal not affecting text, else near fine.
