Important book in the canon of Charles Darwin, the first U.S. edition of ''Voyage of a Naturalist'', the full title being ''Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N.'' New York: Harper & Brothers, 1846. Two volume set in publisher's original binding explores Darwin's five-year voyage on the Beagle as a man in his early 20s, where he questioned his previous belief on the fixed nature of species. It was an important segue in the evolution of his beliefs, with ''On the Origin of Species'' publishes less than 15 years later. Bound in dark brown boards with gilt illustration to front boards and gilt titling to spine. With illustrations within the text. Books measure 4.75'' x 7.25'' and run 351pp. and 324pp. respectively, with 12pp. of advertisements at end of volume II. Previous owner's 1889 inscription to endpapers, and foxing within. Shelf wear to each volume, with chipping to rear joints. Volume II has moisture damage to front board, affecting first 50pp. Hinges tight. Overall in good to very good condition.
