Important Carl Jung autograph letter signed, describing a transformative event that unearthed subconscious subject matter leading directly to his book, ''Answer to Job''. Published in 1952, a year after this letter, ''Answer to Job'' is considered by many to be Jung's most influential work. Datelined Kusnacht, Switzerland on 9 April 1951, Jung writes to his mentee, Dr. Rivkah Scharf, in full:
''Dear Doctor, / Thank you for your kind letter! Unfortunately, I am not able to reply to you from Bollingen. I was forced to return here after only two days because I became ill with a high fever (39.5 C). General infection, intestines, liver, bladder. In bed all last week. No more fever now, and I am able to get out of bed again, but I am frail. I was taken down into the unconscious and impregnated with content matter that I will have to develop, in spite of my frailty. All of it is completely inevitable. Title: 'Answer to Job.' God have mercy on me, I do not know where this will lead. I am still at sea. A renewal has come about. A different level and a new motivating force that is unexpected to me. Traveling along the edges of death. A piece of mundane reality appears to have fallen away, allowing me to move around more freely within the spiritual sphere.
I congratulate you on your successes! I feel a sense of great relief that you are allowing the light to shine in my place. / Briefly and cordially
/ Your C.G. Jung / P. S. Next week I hope to be in Bollingen again. I have been making good progress every day.''
Single page letter on onionskin measures 8.375'' x 11.75''. Folds, overall near fine condition.
