Confederate Attorney General Thomas H. Watts autograph letter twice-signed, datelined Montgomery, Alabama on 9 July 1860. Writing to Presidential candidate John Bell, Watts asks for Bell's position ''on the subject of the slavery question'', as he feels ''the humblest voter has a right'' to this information. Bell's platform would turn out to be neutral on slavery. Lengthy three-page letter reads in small part, ''...I have mingled my voice with yours at every Presidential contest in the advocacy of Whig men and Whig measures...I seek for only such information as the humblest voter has a right to expect from a candidate who seeks preferment or place...please find a platform of principles, adopted by the American and Whig party of Alabama...on the subject of the slavery question...What objection can there be to the announcement, that the Constitution...is the Constitution you support and will maintain in the administration of the Government?...'' Letter on bifolium stationery measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Folds, overall very good plus condition.
