1649 Broadside issued by Oliver Cromwelll's Parliament during the Third English Civil War announcing new measures to prevent crime. These were normally issued by the crown, but King Charles I was ousted and the monarchy temporarily abolished earlier that year. This was also the height of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the year Cromwell began the violent reconquest of Ireland. The first order announces a bounty of ten pounds payable upon the conviction of highwaymen or burglars. It also encourages sheriffs to disarm ''Papists, Delinquents, and other Suspicious persons'', and implores authorities and maritime officials to prosecute ''Vagrants and Rogues'' from Ireland, or send them back. The song ''Whiskey in the Jar'' is about the armed robbery of an English captain by an Irishman during this time in history. The second order announces that law enforcement is entitled to offer clemency to such convicts for giving up their cohorts. Distribution of broadsides on the streets was a popular means of communication with the public at the time. Measures 8.25'' x 13.25. Mounted to paper to an overall size of 11.5'' x 18.5''. Toning, creasing, and slightly irregularly trimmed edges. Very good.
