Defendants ''William J Clinton'' and ''Hillary Rodham Clinton'' sign the final page of a ''Confidential Settlement Document'' in an effort to put their decade of legal troubles with convicted white collar criminal and cocaine dealer Peter F. Paul to rest. ''Paul v. Clinton,'' the controversial 2004 civil suit against the Clintons, was filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. In 2000, the Plaintiff produced a fundraising event for Hillary's Senate campaign called ''Hollywood Farewell Gala Salute to President William Jefferson Clinton''. However, Paul's motive for funding the million-dollar evening was his hope that Bill Clinton would assume a position on the board of Stan Lee Media, Paul's joint venture with Stan Lee (creator of Spider Man, Hulk, and others). Immediately following the event, the ''Washington Post'' exposed Paul's criminal record, and Hillary downplayed her ties to Paul. The Federal Election Commission investigated the financial details of the million-dollar gala, which Paul had funded with money borrowed fraudulently from Merrill Lynch; Clinton's camp was found to have under-reported the amounts involved. Hillary's campaign was fined, but she was not found guilty of accepting illegal funds. The scandal, however, resulted in Paul filing a cascade of lawsuits against the Clintons, the FEC and eventually even his own lawyers. Criminal charges against the Clintons were all dismissed, and Paul was ordered to pay Hillary's legal fees in 2007. Under the terms set forth in this settlement, the Clintons waive their right to collect from Paul the attorneys' fees awarded to them by the court. Gary Smith, named alongside the Clintons as a defendant, also releases Paul of his court-ordered obligation to compensate him in the amount of $500. The Defendants, in turn, ask Paul to relinquish his claim of $532.70 in court costs. The agreement goes on to state: ''...Upon receipt of a copy of this Agreement executed by the Plaintiff...Smith will cause a simultaneous payment in the amount of $2500 to be delivered to...council for Plaintiff...'' Accompanied by an unsigned 2pp. document - the form the Clinton team asked Paul's attorney to sign and file with the Superior Court of California to have the suit dismissed. Paul, for his part, is currently incarcerated in Texas for securities fraud having to do with stock in Stan Lee Media. Dated 12 April 2010, the 8pp. document measures 8.5'' x 11''.
