Benjamin Harrison proclamation signed as President, declaring Columbus Day as a national holiday. In addition to marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' landing in the Americas, the year 1892 also saw violent lynchings of Italian-Americans in New Orleans. Harrison sought to mollify the community with the Proclamation, in addition easing relations with Italy. Single page bifolium measures 8'' x 10'', signed by Harrison, ''Benj Harrison''. The Proclamation designates 21 October 1892 as the national holiday, which is the anniversary according to the Gregorian calendar. Folds, overall near fine condition.
