Award presented to tennis legend Arthur Ashe in 1968, during his service in the U.S. Army. As a member of the ROTC at UCLA, Ashe was subsequently commissioned as a second lieutenant and not surprisingly, became the head of the tennis program at West Point. A letter opener engraved ''Fort Benning, GA'' is mounted to a wooden plaque reading, ''Arthur Ashe / 11 Oct 1968 / Fort Benning, GA''. By this time, Ashe had already broken ground as the first black tennis player to be chosen for the prestigious U.S. Davis Cup Team. Heptagonal wooden plaque measures 8.25'' at its widest and 14'' at its longest. Near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
