Autograph letter signed by Robert W. Darwin, a medical doctor who funded his son Charles Darwin's expedition on the HMS Beagle. Dated 21 January 1842, the elder Darwin writes an intriguing letter marked ''Private'' to the family's financial advisor Thomas Salt, in part, ''...I have not any money as I told you...& I rather wish to avoid this loan if I can with civility...RW Darwin''. Letter on bifolium stationery measures 4.5'' x 7.375'' unfolded. Tear from red wax seal and hole at center, overall very good condition.
