Arthur Ashe's 1974 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments at the height of his career. He published an entire book about the thrilling year of his life playing tennis all over the world between Wimbledon of 1973 and that of 1974, called "Portrait in Motion." Ashe's very concise entries serve as reminders for his various engagements of this whirlwind year, including global travel and reminders to "Rest" and "Order Clothes For Wimbledon", also "CBS TV Classic", "World Cup", "Wimbledon", "ATP Board meeting" and "Davis Cup". Very frequently he writes other players whom he competed against and the result: in late February, for a tournament in London he writes, "beat John Lloyd 6-3; 6-4 / beat [Harold] Solomon 6-1; 6-1 / lost to [Bjorn] Borg 6-4; 7-6"; shortly thereafter, however, he "beat Borg 6-3; 3-6; 6-3". He and Borg dramatically went back and forth that year as Borg would beat him ("6-3 in 3rd set") a month later. Elsewhere he writes on successive pages, "beat [Tom] Leonard / beat Pancho [Gonzales] / beat [Graham] Stillwell [sic]". He writes various reminders and notes to himself, such as "pick up rackets", "bad hotel (no bathtub)" and in caps, "RACIAL PREJUDICE". He writes of one tournament, "players can hardly wait to leave" and "linesmen make lots of mistakes". He writes various media appearances such as, "Barbara Walters 'Not for women only'". An interesting passage in late November concerns dealing with a difficult situation; his last sentence is "Wait a month - you'll see I'm serious" after he writes "Wants money". With much more personal content, such as the last page, where he lists 20 rock songs including "Hey Jude," "Super Fly (Love Scene)", "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Purple Haze." Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most pages of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild wear to edges. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A fascinating record of one of tennis' greats, at the apex of his career.
