Arthur Ashe's 1973 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments at the height of his awe-inspiring career. He published an entire book about the thrilling 1973-1974 year, playing tennis all over the world, called "Portrait in Motion." Ashe's concise entries here serve as reminders for his various engagements, phone numbers and notes to himself. He pencils in Angela Bassett, Dionne Warwick, Senator Kennedy, Faruk Kahn, Cosby, "Ali" and "gambling with Joe Frazier". He also notes a meeting with fellow tennis pro Bunny Austin and jots a quote from him: "Bunny: What you are may 'say' more than what I say". He schedules "Catalina w/ Okker", the WCT Doubles, an ATP meeting, and various tennis notes such as "Doubles partner for French & Italian" and "seedings for Wimbledon"; interestingly, shortly thereafter he writes "Wimbledon / said we must withdraw immediately" and then the next day, "Wimbledon Re-seed". He writes a lengthy draft letter promoting tennis clinics for youngsters in Cleveland. He also comments on one page, "Got nasty letters from England" and "Spent 5 hours writing London Times piece". On one dizzying page, he lists his tour schedule through the summer and fall: "French May 25 / Italian 2 June…Wimbledon 25 June-7 July / Rest (Gstaad)…Boston…L.A…Europe" with many more cities in-between. He sometimes makes observations such as the one on 25 July, "Urban League meetings at Hilton (black kids hollering 'Niggr' in pool)", and writes reminders and to do lists to himself throughout. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most pages of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild wear to edges. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A personal record filled with hundreds of handwritten notes by the tennis legend.
