Arthur Ashe's 1981 day planner, with notations written in his hand. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which abruptly changed two years prior, when he suffered from a heart attack and was forced to retire. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his mostly brief, but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. He starts the diary with a list of 10 well-known athletes and, next to the list, writes several interesting topics, ostensibly as they relate to sports including "Drugs…homosexuality…Title IX…recruiting…free agentry". Tennis engagements include "Masters Week", with match-ups listed of various players, "ATP Board Meeting", "Davis Cup Deadline", Wimbledon and more. Under the heading "Davis Cup La Costa", Ashe writes the names of various players along with a number next to them; Connors is "988-990", McEnroe 642, Tanner 668, etc. Personal reminders include, "Father's Birthday", "Jeanne's Birthday", "My Birthday", "Dinner with Diane Keaton", and more including the "Bing Crosby" event taking up four pages. On his busy social calendar, he lists various weddings, drinks and cocktail parties, including "Hall of Fame Dinner / I am Emcee / Black Tie", "White House Trip", "Leroy Neiman portrait" and more. Media events include "Good Morning America", several "Post Columns", and he also keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines throughout the year, but especially in boxing, with "Holmes-Spinks Bout Detroit" and "Sugar Ray Leonard/Hearns fight". With literally thousands of notes throughout, all in Ashe's hand appearing on most every page, including poem verses that inspired him, information on his Davis Cup teammates, etc. Spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book has a black faux-leather soft cover measuring 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with only mild wear. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. For many more photos detailing this lot please copy and paste the following link: www.photobucket.com/1981journal
