Arthur Ashe's 1980 day planner, with all notations written in his hand. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which abruptly changed in 1979 when he suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire in 1980. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his concise entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. Personal reminders written by Ashe include, "Our engagement", "Parents' Anniversary", "family reunion", "Begin food diary", "Hunting Season Opens" and many more. He writes on several occasions a list of athletes and celebrities, with some of their names crossed off; one such list under the header "EMK" reads in part, "Sugar Ray Leonard / O.J. / Bill Russell / Jack Youngblood…Kareem Jabar / Magic Johnson". He jots McEnroe's phone number on another page, and lists him with Connor and Vilas, ostensibly as people to call. On his busy social calendar, he lists various weddings, drinks, cocktail parties, including "People Mag Luncheon", "Hall of Fame Luncheon", "Jackie Robinson Dinner", "Dinner with Cosell" among others, and media appearances on ABC and the Dick Cavett show. His traveling was extensive, to Paris, Acapulco, Wimbledon (noting his commitment to broadcast for HBO), Australian Open, and many places around the U.S., sometimes within a single week. He also keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines throughout the year, including the Ali-Holmes fight. He also makes notes to himself during a day of boxing where he was interviewing the boxers, including Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard; he writes, "After S.R.L. fight - keep hand mike low and interview winner with hand mike". He also writes notes to himself about either a speech or manuscript regarding athletes. Very dense notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
