Arthur Ashe's 1979 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which was thwarted this year as he suffered from a heart attack, forcing him to retire from professional tennis. On 13 December 1979, Ashe underwent a quadruple bypass surgery, marking "HEART OPERATION" in block letters that day. His daily priorities are revealed through his concise entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. Ashe here mentions various engagements to play tennis, as well as his commitments to attend "ATP Queens 125,000 / Brussels 50 / Davis Cup" and "Wimbledon" on 25 June. He also writes what seem to be notes for a column, "future of tennis / lack of direction…Hayes, Lee…drugs / what happened / Wimbledon / Howard Cosell / killer instinct". He also lists 15 men's tennis players, including himself and starting with "Borg / Connor / McEnroe / Gerulaitis / Vilas…" Media appearances include "60 Minutes A.M." among others, and on his busy social calendar, Ashe writes "NYC - Paris - Strasbourg - Paris - Florence", as he took a grand European tour. He records personal engagements such as "Our Wedding Anniversary", "Black Caucus Dinner", "White House RIF" and "VOTE!!" in November. He also keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, marking the day the World Series starts and the Super Bowl. Countless notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book, save for a week or two off the whole year. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
