Lot of 20 Mary Astor signed letters, comprising 11 autograph letters and 9 typed letters, all signed ''Mary'', dating from 1960 and 1961. Also a bestselling author, in many letters to her agent Gloria Safier, Astor complains about Doubleday as a publisher. She writes, ''...Doubleday is a sort of MGM of the publishing business...They have a big volume, and not neccessarily [sic] a quality production. And I also feel -- as I felt when I was with MGM -- that there is lack of personal attention...'' Astor's career did not take off with MGM, despite her iconic role in ''The Maltese Falcon,'' made for Warner Brothers before she signed with MGM. Astor writes in her letters about her upcoming books, ''The Incredible Charlie Carewe'' and ''The Image of Kate,'' moving into her new house, Stella Maris, in Malibu, and TV appearances. Documents vary in size from 6'' x 8'' to 8.5'' x 11''. Letters exceeding 1pp. are on separate sheets. Light toning and creasing, else very good plus condition.
