Segment of heat shield taken from the Apollo 8 Command Module, after the successful completion of the mission in December 1968. Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to leave Earth's low orbit and actually orbit the moon. Heat shield, which is charred at bottom from reentry, measures approximately 1.25'' x 1.75'', encased in an acrylic capsule-sized display, measuring 3.625'' x 1.5'' x 3''. Bottom has vintage label with information about the Apollo 8 mission. Some yellowing to acrylic, and light scratching, overall in very good condition.
