Charlie Duke signed 20'' x 16'' photo of the Apollo 1 crew, with his handwritten statement about improving astronaut safety after the Apollo 1 fire that killed Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee. Composed in black felt-tip, Duke writes in full, ''After the tragic Apollo I fire on the launch pad that killed Grissom, White and Chaffee in January 1967, Stu Roosa and I were assigned to be the astronauts on the launch pad emergency escape team. We developed two escape routes. One required the crew to exit the spacecraft, run to the pad elevator, take it down to the bottom, exit and run through a shower, then down a slide tube, then into the blast room. You could survive in the blast room for 30 days. / Charlie Duke / Apollo 16 Moonwalker''. Glossy photo measures 20'' x 16''. Near fine condition.
