Red Cross poster, circa 1920, encouraging American school children to learn how to swim. In the early 1900s, Wilbert Longfellow, a journalist who often reported on drownings, started a one-man campaign to reduce the number of deaths from drowning. In 1914, he enlisted the help of the Red Cross to ''waterproof'' America, and swimming instruction soon became available across the country. This poster is part of that Red Cross campaign to publicize the importance of learning to swim. Moderate creasing, toning and chipping to 18.5'' x 25'' paper poster. Very good condition.
