Albert Einstein typed letter signed, dated 12 February 1943 on Princeton's The Institute for Advanced Study letterhead. Signed in black fountain pen, Einstein writes to Professor Harlow Shapley at the Harvard College Observatory, in full:
''I am gladly willing to join the National Committee for the commemoration of the four hundreth [sic] anniversary of the death of Copernicus. I shall also send the requested message. However, my poor health will probably not permit to attend the metting in New York. / Very sincerely yours, / [signed] A. Einstein. / Professor Albert Einstein.''
Copernicus, of course, postulated that the Earth revolved around the Sun, thereby ushering in the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries, and laying the groundwork for Einstein's Theory of Relativity four hundred years later. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Minor creasing, folds and two small closed tears to right edge. Very good condition.
