Albert Einstein autograph letter signed, undated but from Princeton in June 1946 after his sister Maja suffered a debilitating stroke. Einstein writes to his brother-in-law (Maja's husband), Paul Winteler, regarding Maja's health; during WWII, Maja had lived in exile with Einstein, but Paul was denied entry due to health reasons, and was therefore still living in Italy. German letter translates in full,

''Dear Pauli! Albert [Einstein's son] and his family will be leaving during the first days of July. They will relate to you everything worth knowing about our little world here. Maja is not quite ready yet to be able to join them. It will be better for her to travel by air, anyway. It is so much faster and associated with fewer complications. Meanwhile, we are sending most of the luggage with them. I am of the opinion that it would be best by far, if she could be taken to your Italian home right away, since an unstable life under unfamiliar conditions would constitute serious stress for her, which probably would not be beneficial for her.

Your letters have been her greatest joy through all these years. I am a lazy correspondent myself, and I really appreciate the immense patience and empathy with which you have sweetened for her these years of 'being exiled.' She has often read particularly interesting passages from these letters to me, and I always took pleasure in them myself as well. / For today, the most heartfelt greetings to you, and to Michele as well, when you see him, / from your / Albert.''

Maja's ability to travel back to Europe was not to be, and she passed away five years later still living in Princeton. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 10.75'', on thin, translucent paper. With bold writing by Einstein, in near fine condition.
