Abraham Lincoln document signed as President, dated 21 March 1862. Signed ''Abraham Lincoln'', the President here authorizes the U.S. Envoy to Prussia, Norman B. Judd, to ''exchange the ratifications of the Treaty with Hanover for the abolition of the Trade Dues''. Perhaps no other man was more responsible for the Presidential victory of Abraham Lincoln than Norman Judd, Republican State Chairman in Illinois in the late 1850s. Judd was an important strategist for Lincoln in his debates with Stephen Douglas that elevated Lincoln to a national political figure, and as a member of the Republican National Committee, Judd was not only able to move the National Convention to Chicago - where Lincoln had home court advantage, but arranged the seating chart at the Convention so that anti-Lincoln men were in the back. ''By cracky, Abe's nominated'', he reportedly told his wife after finishing the chart. And finally, it was Judd who nominated Lincoln at the convention, famously proclaiming, ''I desire, on behalf of the delegation from Illinois, to put in nomination as a candidate for president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois''. Now, as President, Lincoln appointed his good friend as Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia, as this document attests. Partially printed document measures 8'' x 9.875''. Hole punched to left side, smoothed folds, and some browning to margins. Overall very good plus condition.
