Two Harper Lee autograph letters signed, dated 21 March 2009 and 22 December 2009. Both letters are written to Sue, a friend. In the first letter, Harper discusses the death of Horton Foote, playwright and screenwriter of ''To Kill a Mockingbird''. The letter reads: ''What a delight to hear from you, even when you bore bad news! Horton was most dear to me. His death was like his life-- quiet and unassuming. He simply went to bed one night and died in his sleep. I shall miss him for the rest of my days. If Horton was your friend, it meant that you had another 'best friend' in your life... Now I'm something else again: a stroke took out my left side but not the few marbles I still possess. Guess I'll be wheelchair-bound for the time to come / I write (this) and read with a reading machine which lets me see what I'm doing. Otherwise, life is great! / Hope you and Cedric are robust! / Much love, Nelle''. Letter is 2pp., written on one page (front and back) of plain white paper measuring 8.5'' x 11''. In the second letter, Lee discusses her living situation: ''Nothing happens here in this 'assisted living' establishment, but I have no complaints whatsoever. The people are excellent and so is the food. It's an excellent refuge for the wheelchair-bound''. Letter is 2pp., written on one sheet of cardstock with ''NHL'' monogram at top, measuring 5.25'' x 7.5''. Both letters include original envelopes. Folds to first letter, minor crease to second letter, else near fine.
