"Gazette of the United States" issue 23 of Volume IV, published 18 August 1792 in Philadelphia. The formation of Washington, D.C. (tapped as the nation's new capital in 1790) is reported here, with articles on a ceremony for laying one of the first Boundary Markers, and construction of a federal bridge. The District of Columbia was formed from land given by Maryland and Virginia, its borders delineated by 40 boundary stones. In other news, "A Republican" writes of fears of a return to monarchy. This was the year of the first partisan presidential campaign, with Federalists facing off against Jeffersonian Republicans. 4pp. newspaper measures 10" x 16.5". Ink notations at top, else near fine condition.
