Richard Nixon autograph letter signed ''Dick''. Upon his personal stationery, letter is dated 20 August 1989 and addressed to his friend, newspaper publisher Helen Copley. He suggests she speak with the former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Frank Shakespeare. In full, ''I just had a briefing from Frank Shakespeare who has just completed three years of service at the Vatican. He is going to spend a month vacating [sic, vacationing] with his son and it occurred to me that you would find a meeting with him fascinating. He has axes to grind but can give you some extremely valuable insights into the Pope's foreign policy initiatives. With warm regards...'' Shakespeare served as Nixon's Director of the U.S. Information Agency from 1969-1973 and Ambassador to the Vatican from January 1987 to July 1989. One page letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5'' with minor toning, else near fine. Includes original envelope addressed by typewriter to ''Mrs. Helen Copley, Copley Newspapers, La Jolla, California''. Fine condition.
