First edition, first printing of ''Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism''. New York: Works Publishing Company, 1939. One of just approximately 1,900 surviving copies from the 4,860 first printed in April of 1939, before becoming one of the most influential books of the 20th century. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. Runs 400pp. and measures 6.25'' x 9.25'' x 2'' thick, bound in original red cloth boards with gilt lettering. Book has been restored with new endpapers (copy of original endpapers used showing previous owner's inscriptions), light shelf wear and front joint minimally exposed. Overall in very good condition. We're told that the previous owner of this book passed away in November 2017 at the age of 90 with 56 years of continuous sobriety.
