Huddie Ledbetter, aka Lead Belly autograph letter signed, on his personalized ''Sweet Singer of the Swamplands'' stationery. George Harrison said of the influential Ledbetter, ''No Lead Belly, no Beatles'', and his songs, such as ''Midnight Special'' and ''Cotton Fields'', have been covered by Bob Dylan, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Tom Petty, ABBA, The Grateful Dead, The White Stripes, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin and dozens more. Though enormously influential and popular during his lifetime, Ledbetter struggled financially until his death in 1949, evidenced by this letter, circa early 1940s. Letter reads in part, uncorrected for errors, ''Dear Mr Repelsky i rec all of your letters and [?] But i am in a tuff spot right now but i'm trying all i can to get a $1000 dollars if i can i will send you all the money and you pay to the papers...i am got to pay rent and some more, so pleas for give me for not sending it now...so long H Ledbetter''. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Some archival tape to verso, uniform toning and folds. Overall very good condition.
