Handwritten manuscript by Richard Nixon, circa 1958, elucidating his thoughts on a host of issues including Civil Rights. Document was given by Nixon to his biographer Earl Mazo, who wrote, ''Richard Nixon: A Political and Personal Portrait'' in 1959. Manuscript is numbered with five points: ''...Mazo / 1.) History lesson - keep head - keep events in perspective / 2.) Check for all comments re Knight - etc. which are derogatory...'' Comment about Knight likely refers to California Governor Goodwin Knight, a political rival at the time. Nixon was involved in a power battle for control of the Republican party in California, and the eventual elimination of Knight as Governor led to Nixon controlling the party in that state. Further bullet points include ''... 3.) Check comments re disagreement with Press / 4.) Right to work position / 5.) Majority rule need for protection of minorities - Individuals have individual rights majority can't deny...'' The note finishes interestingly, with the phrase ''Civil Rights'' written on the bottom. Handwritten in pencil on yellow legal paper measuring 8'' x 12.5''. Very good.
