King George III document signed. Handwritten document by an unknown hand is dated 9 March 1798 and pertains to an incident dated 30 November 1788, the month the King's debilitating mental illness worsened dramatically. In the summer of that year His Royal Highness had traveled to Cheltenham Spa to convalesce but relapsed again in November, enduring spells of speaking incessantly and suffering delusions. Document reads in full, ''Money found in the King's drawer in his dressing room at Windsor on Sunday Nov. 30th 1788...in presence of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, Duke of York, Lord Brudenell and W. Mathias. / [Itemized list totaled in pounds in a column at the right] In a little green leather purse 31 New G...In a leather bag 41 Guineas...Bank notes in different parcels... / Queen's Lodge December 2 1788...March 9 1789 Rece'd of the Right Honourable L. Brudenell by the hands of Gabriel Mathias the above notes and cash. [signed] George R''. The November episode led to the passing of the Regency Bill, providing for his son George to take power as Prince Regent. George III recovered, however, and though he relapsed on several more occasions, George IV did not ascend the throne as King until 1811. Single-page document on card-style stationery measures 6.5'' x 8''. Mounted attractively to green paperboard with printed caption to an overall size of 11'' x 13.5'', else near fine.
